Valence House has been voted as one of the 50 best free things to do in London and one of the best local history museums in Greater London. Winner of Visit England's Best Told Story award, the 13 museum galleries explore Barking and Dagenham's amazing history from Prehistory to the modern day. Rich in objects, displays include the story of the worlds first all-female bag pipe playing marching band, Barking Abbey, the nationally significant collection of Fanshawe family portraits, and much, much more. The archive provides unique and fascinating information on the people and places of Barking and Dagenham. Visitors can also enjoy a homemade meal in the Tulip Tree Tearoom before taking a leisurely stroll around our stunning landscaped gardens.
