The East of England is a vast, fascinating area. From the boundless landscapes of Suffolk to the universities of Cambridge, and from the bustling towns and cities of Essex and Hertfordshire to the peace and tranquillity of the Norfolk Broads, you really could spend a lifetime exploring, and as much the region is at or below sea level, waterways, wetlands and coastline are a large part of its charm.
Suffolk and Norfolk form East Anglia, and its numerous small towns and intricate network of waterways, have enchanted visitors for centuries, even now retaining a feeling of the best of England’s past.
Cambridgeshire is known for its universities, but there is so much more, including the lowest point in the UK, deep in Holme Fen National Nature Reserve, near Peterborough.
The clay and sandstone foundations of Bedfordshire are reflected in towns and cities throughout the UK, as for many years it was home to the largest brickworks in Britain, although brickmaking ended in the early 21st century. Woburn Abbey, the fascinating Woburn Safari Park, and the picturesque Dunstable Downs are also a big draw.
Lincolnshire may be best known for its impressive cathedral, its dykes, wolds and marshes, or perhaps for as a major producer of Maris Piper potatoes.
As well as a stunning Norman cathedral, Hertfordshire is also home to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour – The Making of Harry Potter, and Hatfield House.
