Thornbury Castle Hotel★★★★
"Sleep where Henry VIII once slept and enjoy a spot of falconry."
Overview
History fans may be interested to learn that Henry VIII ordered the first owner of Thornbury Castle to be beheaded! Guests today have the opportunity of sleeping in historical surroundings fitted out with all the modern amenities. Most rooms have four-poster or coronet beds and real fires, and guests can choose to sleep in the Duke's Bedchamber where King Henry and Anne Boleyn once slept, or in the Tower Suite that reputedly has the widest four-poster bed in England. Tranquil lounges enjoy views over the wonderful gardens, while elegant, wood-panelled dining rooms make a memorable setting for a leisurely meal. Activities include falconry and archery and the castle has its own vineyard. Thornbury is, of course, a popular wedding venue.

About the area
Gloucestershire is home to a variety of landscapes, including the Cotswolds, a region of gentle hills, valleys and gem-like villages that roll through the county. To their west is the Severn Plain, watered by Britain’s longest river and characterised by orchards and farms marked out by hedgerows that blaze with mayflower in the spring; beyond the Severn are the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley.
