Revolution House

Overview
To the north of Chesterfield lies the village of Old Whittington, where a group of daring conspirators led by the Earl of Devonshire met in 1688 to hatch a plot to overthrow the Catholic King James II. The plot was successful; the country welcomed William of Orange and the course of history was changed. The meeting took place in a little thatched inn called the Cock and Pynot, now known as Revolution House and a modest tourist attraction, furnished in 17th-century style and with a video telling the story of the Revolution. Just two miles away is Newbold Moor, where the tiny Norman Chapel was attacked in the same year by a mob of Protestants. The chapel, now restored, has a simple weather-beaten charm. Nearby is Tapton House, the home in later life of George Stephenson, the pioneering railway engineer.
