The small cob and thatch cottage where novelist and poet Thomas Hardy was born in 1840. From here he would walk three miles to school in Dorchester every day. It was built by his great-grandfather and is little altered since. The interior has been furnished by the Trust. It was here that he wrote his early novels Under the Greenwood Tree and Far from the Madding Crowd. It is surrounded by quintessential cottage gardens.
