The Vyne
Overview
Built in the 16th century, and extended over the centuries, The Vyne was originally the home of William Sandys, Henry VIII's Lord Chamberlain. Henry VIII visited The Vyne a number of times, with Anne Boleyn, and Jane Austen also visited the house. During WWII an entire boys' boarding school was evacuated to The Vyne from Kent. Inside the house visitors can see furniture and paintings as well as a family chapel. The grounds are particularly attractive, and contain a summer house, an ornamental lake, a walled garden that is also a working kitchen garden, and a number of signed walks. Events such as an open-air theatre takes place in the grounds, and the lawns in front of the house are popular for picnics. The house is undergoing major roof repairs and for a time only the ground floor will be open. Check website for updates.
