Dundrum Castle

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
This medieval castle, one of the finest in Ireland, was built in 1777 by John De Courcy in a strategic position overlooking Dundrum Bay, a position which offers visitors fine views over the sea and to the Mourne Mountains. The castle was captured by King John in 1210 and was badly damaged by Cromwellian troops in 1652. Still an impressive ruin, it shows a massive round keep with walls 16 metres high and 2 metres thick, surrounded by a curtain wall, and a gatehouse which dates from the 13th century.
