Harry's Walls

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
An unfinished artillery fort, built above St Mary's Pool harbour in 1552-53. The 'Harry' mentioned is Henry VIII, who ordered a chain of fortresses built in southern England to protect the coast from possible French or Spanish incursion. No work was completed during Henry's reign, but Edward VI began the building. After a while it became clear that this location wasn't the best, so the fortress was abandoned. Over the years, much of the stone has been taken away.
