Wakefield Cathedral

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
Wakefield claims the highest spire in Yorkshire (247ft/75m) for its cathedral, which dates back to Norman times but is largely medieval in appearance. This is partly thanks to restoration in the mid-19th century by George Gilbert Scott and his son John Oldrid Scott, with sympathetic extensions by John Pearson in the early 20th century. The most significant stained glass is by Charles Eamer Kempe (1837–1907), who contributed some 23 windows over his lifespan. The cathedral is a seat of the Bishop of Leeds. Refurbishment at the start of the 21st century included the laying of a distinctive labyrinth in the new floor. Full restoration of the cathedral and crypt was completed in May 2016.

About the area
Everybody knows that Yorkshire has some special landscapes. The Dales and the Moors first spring to mind, but what about West Yorkshire? That’s Leeds and Bradford isn’t it? Back-to-back houses and blackened mills… Certainly if you had stood on any of the hills surrounding Hebden Bridge a hundred years ago, and gazed down into the valley, all you would have seen was the pall of smoke issuing from the chimneys of 33 textile mills.
