The mellow stone and elegant proportions of Georgian Papplewick Hall mark it out as one of Nottinghamshire finest stately homes. Built by Frederick Montague between 1781 and 1786 it is now a family home, so opening times are limited – check the website for up-to-date details. Grade I listed, the house is surrounded by parkland and gardens.

About the area
Most people associate Nottinghamshire in the East Midlands with the legend of Robin Hood, though the former royal hunting ground of Sherwood Forest has been somewhat tamed since Robin’s outlaw days.
