Seaforde Gardens

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
In the historic demesne of Seaforde in Northern Ireland’s County Down, a day spent in these fabulous gardens, mostly dating from the 18th century, is topped off by a visit to the tropical paradise of the butterfly house, where free-flying butterflies create a dreamlike state of colour and movement. Outside, the walled garden, the ornamental garden and a wonderful maze of hornbeam hedges planted in 1975 can be intricately explored or viewed from above via a spiral staircase that leads to the viewing platform at the top of the interesting Moghul Tower. The centrepiece of the maze is a rose-covered arbour – a sweet-smelling reward for those who find it unaided. There’s a children’s play area and a tea room on site, too.
Location
SEAFORDE, Co Down, BT30 8PG
About the area
Geographically, County Down seems to put a long arm around Strangford Lough, over 70 square miles of water. The arm is the Ards Peninsula, the most easterly part of Ireland.
