"Excellent home-cooked food in unspoilt fishing village"
Overview
This charming whitewashed hostelry sits right on the quay in Clovelly, the famously unspoilt 'village like a waterfall', which descends down broad steps to a 14th-century harbour. Guests staying in the whimsically decorated bedrooms can fall asleep to the sound of waves lapping the shingle. Originally a beer house for fishermen and other locals, the Red Lion has plenty of character and offers Cornish ales such as Sharp’s Doom Bar in its snug bar, where you can rub shoulders with the locals. Alternatively, you could settle in the Harbour Bar, and sample the home-cooked food, the modern seasonal menu specialising in fresh seafood, which is landed daily right outside the door. Choose pan-fried fillet of sea bass with cream bean cassoulet, or opt for medallions of wild venison, or beetroot risotto served with parsnip chips.
