The Walnut Tree Inn
"Intelligent seasonal cooking in rural location."
Overview
At this iconic restaurant, it is revered chef Shaun Hill who is still at the helm. The inn is immaculately presented, with a tiny bar and a spacious dining room split into two. It’s light and airy, with bare tables, and large modern paintings on the walls. The atmosphere is informal but professional and the daily-changing menu is rooted in the classics.
Every dish is rock solid and reliable with a real understanding of ingredients, flavours and techniques. Typical dishes are baked crab soufflé; fillet of beef, Loire white asparagus, morels, bearnaise sauce; and chocolate Paris-Brest with praline ice cream.

About the area
In their bid to control the borderlands of Monmouthshire – also known as the Marches – the Normans built a triangle of castles: Grosmont, Skenfrith and White. At first, they were simple wooden structures strengthened by earthworks, but when the lively Welsh refused to stop attacking them, it was decided more permanent fortresses were needed
