Galvin La Chapelle
"Very stylish modern European cooking in a jaw-dropping space."
Overview
This Grade II listed building might look like an old church, but it began life as the gymnasium in a Victorian school. Usefully located close to Liverpool Street Station, everything about La Chapelle, from the curvaceous leather seats to the soaringly high arched and beamed ceiling, makes this is a properly stunning location. Food is taken seriously here, and service is reassuringly friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. The wine list is a mighty, Mediterranean-led affair, and there’s a champagne trolley if you’re in the mood for fizz.
Menus range from à la carte and eight-course tasting options, as well as a set lunch that’s really rather reasonable for the location and standard of cooking. They’re open for Sunday lunch too if you fancy a more relaxed family style sharing experience. If you’re after something elegant you might begin with a beautifully balanced starter of Dorset crab raviolo, charred fennel and dashi beurre blanc, or a light and refreshing Corsican seabass ballotine with cedro, guanciale and yuzu koshō. Alternatively, you might opt for romana artichoke with tomato dashi and aged pecorino, or a wood-fired Anjou pigeon served with blood orange and dark chocolate. Main courses run from Herdwick lamb with courgette escabeche and smoked eel, to barbecued Cornish monkfish with smoked shellfish guazzetto and samphire. You can also enjoy a Dedham Vale grass-fed côte de boeuf served with smoked bone marrow and sauce bordelaise as a main course, or wild garlic risotto with Kalamata olive and preserved lemon. Desserts are equally delightful, perhaps a Nicaraguan chocolate rocher with passionfruit and toffee, or strawberry crémeux with steamed almond and fermented elderflower. A baba au tiramisù is also a dessert option, made to share and served table side – as theatrical as it is delicious.
