"An amazing castle with plenty of history and lots to do and see."
Overview
Set high on a hill in West Sussex, this magnificent castle and stately home, seat of the Dukes of Norfolk for nearly 1,000 years, commands stunning views across the River Arun and out to sea. Climb to the keep and battlements; marvel at a fine collection of 16th-century furniture; see portraits by Van Dyke, Gainsborough, Canaletto and others; admire tapestries and the personal possessions of Mary, Queen of Scots; wander in the grounds and renovated Victorian flower and vegetable gardens. The Collector Earl's Garden is divided into formal courts with a centre canal pond, tufa-lined cascade and the Earl's Coronet 'dancing' on a jet of water. There are regular 'living history' events.

About the area
Divided from East Sussex back in 1888, West Sussex has a variety of landscapes and coastal scenery, but it is the spacious and open South Downs with which the county is most closely associated. There are plenty of walking routes in the South Downs National Park, cycling routes by the sea or visitors can explore the pretty town of Arundel with its historic castle and buildings.
