Mingary Castle
"Glorious views and accomplished seasonal dishes."
Overview
For a restaurant with rooms, Mingary Castle enjoys a simply stunning location. Perched on a picturesque promontory on the west coast of Scotland, the sturdy 13th-century curtain walls shelter this unusual and charming venue on the wild and beautiful Ardnamurchan Peninsula. The castle is slap bang on the shore, with panoramic views across to the Isle of Mull from the viewing platform. Chef Colin Nicholson and his team know what they’re doing, and the candlelit dining room is comfortable and welcoming.
The eight-course tasting menu (there’s a reduced five-course option too) changes daily and showcases skilful modern Scottish cooking with an emphasis on local provenance. The bulk of the produce is sourced from the west coast of Scotland, with fruit, vegetables and herbs from the local community garden. The tasting menus are designed to use the ingredients to their full potential, simple dishes bursting with flavour will be at the heart of the cooking. The presentation is delightful and everything on the menu is intelligently conceived and executed. Three types of bread – sourdough, milk bread and potato focaccia – might be followed by a dish of foraged wild mushroom parfait, pickled shallot and autumn truffle. Tobermory smoked haddock, confit leek and potato foam is a delicate and flavoursome dish, perhaps followed by Highland shorthorn beef, braised short rib, potato tuille, bone marrow crumb, Roscoff onion purée. Next up, goats’ cheese mousse, port gel, rhubarb and date chutney and lavosh flatbread. Finish with Valrhona Jivara chocolate and miso crèmeux and crème fraîche. A seasonal lunchtime menu offers a range of crowd pleasers, perhaps starting with heritage tomatoes, whipped ricotta and tomato tuille. Mains include pan-roasted hake, community garden kale, artichoke and fennel velouté, or rump of beef, confit carrots, thick-cut chips and peppercorn sauce. A pairing features old and new world wines.
