The Fanny Talbot
"Stylish pub dining close to the beach."
Overview
Named after a Victorian landowner and philanthropist, The Fanny Talbot is a friendly inn ideally positioned a short walk from the beach at Barmouth. Off the main street, this is a pub by all appearances and sits happily alongside the usual seaside town offerings of amusement arcades, fish and chip shops and bed and breakfasts. Inside, the high-quality interiors display great attention to detail and offer plenty of character. A parquet floor, ceramic bar front, oak panelling and muted country style colour scheme add to the charm, as does the small, covered beer garden to the front.
The resulting space is a relaxed setting to enjoy the punchy flavours in refined, technically impressive modern British dishes which combine classic fine dining techniques and precise presentation with more gastropub-style dishes. Start, perhaps, with Loch Duart salmon, crispy oyster, crème fraîche, fennel and cucumber, or pork belly, ‘nduja, hispi cabbage spiced carrot purée. For vegetarians, the heritage beetroot, blood orange, sheep’s ricotta and pumpkin is a flavoursome starter. When it comes to main courses, local produce from land and sea gets star billing. A perfectly cooked piece of stone bass is paired with Menai mussels, Jerusalem artichoke, kolrhabi and coastal herbs, whilst loin of Welsh hogget is accompanied by courgette, ratatouille, wild garlic and confit potato. Mushroom risotto, black garlic, maitake and celeriac is a wonderful meat-free option. Finally, you could round things off with Yorkshire rhubarb, puff pastry, whipped custard and rhubarb sorbet, or white chocolate and vanilla cheesecake with blood orange and pistachio. Alternatively, finish with a plate of Welsh artisan cheeses, quince jelly and crackers. If the tasting menu is more your thing, expect to begin a meal with cod loin, onion, artichoke and miso, perhaps followed by roasted free-range chicken, wild garlic, morel mushroom, asparagus and chicken jus.
