"A small 15th-century fortress with added 16th-century manor house."
Overview
Built as a personal fortress by Red Hugh O’Donnell in the 15th century, it was taken over by English captain Sir Basil Brooke in 1616. Brooke built a manor house beside the tower. He also commissioned the chimney-piece, decorated with carved fruit and the Brooke coat of arms. After a period of disuse it was brought back to its former glory in the 1990s. A suite of information panels details the chequered history of the castle and its owners.
