"Classic pub with a rooftop garden in cosmopolitan East End"
Overview
Many of London's Victorian street-corner pubs have a unique architectural style – this is one of them. It's named after 17th-century Spitalfields herbalist, physician and astrologer Nicholas Culpeper. The pub's huge windows help to illuminate original features in the large open interior, and from the bar a curving staircase leads up to a more formal first-floor eating area and kitchen, which makes good use of herbs and vegetables grown in a rooftop greenhouse. The short, daily-changing menu might offer deep-fried black pudding balls with red-eye mayonnaise as a starter; then braised lamb shoulder pie with greens and salsa verde; and chocolate and orange lava cake, praline, and goats' curd sorbet. Real East End beer Truman's Runner might well be among those on hand pump, and 10 wines are by the glass. A bar and dining room on the roof are bookable during the summer for private functions.
