"Family-run pub in tranquil village"
Overview
On the edge of the North York Moors National Park, this village pub is an ideal overnight stop while touring the area, perhaps by steam train from Levisham station. Charles and Toby Wood have created a welcoming atmosphere, especially apparent in the comfortable wooden-floored bar, with a roaring open fire, and real ales from Black Sheep and The Great Yorkshire Brewery. Local suppliers play a big part behind the scenes so that the kitchen can prepare hearty plates of Whitby scampi and chips, steak and ale pie, and sausage and mash with onion gravy.

About the area
North Yorkshire, with its two National Parks and two designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is England’s largest county and one of the most rural. This is prime walking country, from the heather-clad heights of the North York Moors to the limestone country that is so typical of the Yorkshire Dales – a place of contrasts and discoveries, of history and legend.
