Former banker and founder of Chestnut Inns, Philip Turner owns it, having reopened it following a six-month renovation and changing its name from the Kings Head in homage to the adjacent medieval, pedestrian-only bridge across the River Kennet. Just two miles from Newmarket Racecourse, this smart, family-friendly country pub and restaurant attracts all – locals, out-of-town race-goers and everyone in between – to its large dining and bar area. The emphasis in the concise but appealing, regularly changing menus is on quality, locally sourced food and drink, including game from shoots, lamb from Moulton, beers from Woodforde’s and guest breweries, and Harry Sparrow cider from the Suffolk village of Aspall.
