The Fat Duck
"World class cooking at bucket-list destination."
Overview
The Fat Duck is still one of the country’s most unique and extraordinary dining destinations after more than 30 years at the cutting edge of modern cuisine. There really is nowhere like The Fat Duck. Although little has changed on the outside of this bucket-list restaurant, there have been some subtle changes to enhance the experience. As you enter the screened-off area where you are greeted, there is a genuine sense of anticipation.
The kitchen has undergone a major update since the early days which allows for a smoother service. This is a full sensory experience, and the menu – The Journey – takes you into ‘Hestonland’ with a mix of classic Fat Duck dishes –‘Sound of the Sea’ and ‘Counting Sheep’ for instance and a few surprises along the way such as aerated beetroot and horseradish cream; tonic of botanicals – green herbs, smoked cumin and Jerusalem artichoke. Looking just like a miniature seaside ice cream is the crab and passionfruit 99’. Other menu creations are The Mindful Experience, a ‘paired back’ version of The Journey; and the thought-provoking Topsy Turvy menu, on a Thursday, where you eat the dishes from last to first to shake up any dining preconceptions you might have. This idea of Heston’s was so enjoyable he wanted to share it with his guests. For the ultimate experience and the curious diner there is now the Top Seat right beside the chefs who will guide you through every dish. More than a meal whichever menu and seat you go for, this is a ‘journey through the mind’, exploring the way food becomes memories.

About the area
Berkshire consists of two distinct parts: the western half, which is predominantly rural, with the Lambourn Downs spilling down to the River Lambourn and the Berkshire Downs to the majestic Thames, and the eastern half of Berkshire, which offers plenty of opportunity to get out and savour open spaces. Reading and Newbury are the county’s major towns, and the River Kennet flows through them both
