The Old Stamp House Restaurant
"Ambitious Cumbrian cooking in lovely Ambleside."
Overview
Deeply rooted in Lakeland ever since Wordsworth worked here in the postal service, The Old Stamp House Restaurant is now one of the Lake District’s best dining destinations. Run with verve by the Blackburn brothers in a characterful little basement, whitewashed walls and dark beams exude a cosy, intimate feel, and service is personal with dishes explained by the team. A passion for Cumbrian produce is shown in tasting menus of creatively presented contemporary dishes – trout smoked in-house with horseradish and cucumber, or halibut with hispi, fermented artichoke and dill. Elsewhere, Herdwick hogget stars in a multifaceted dish with Morteau sausage, fermented damson juice and pickled mustard.

About the area
Cumbria's rugged yet beautiful landscape is best known for the Lake District National Park that sits within its boundaries. It’s famous for Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, and Derwent Water, ‘Queen of the English Lakes', but other lesser-known areas in the south, such as the Lune Valley and the coastal towns, are secret gems of wide cobbled streets and rolling hills
