"Elegant country house dining by the sea."
Overview
A comfortable Victorian hunting lodge in 30 luxuriant acres with its own shingle beach, Knockinaam Lodge certainly offers a taste of wild coastal Scotland for guests. Tucked away in a craggy cove, the original house has morphed into a country house bolthole with a real slice of history – Churchill and Eisenhower once met to plan D-Day here, but it’s unlikely they dined as well as 21st-century guests who are treated to the hugely experienced culinary talent of Tony Pierce, who has been a steady hand at the helm for the best part of three decades. An elegant double-aspect dining room with an impressive wooden fireplace makes the most of the unforgettable views over manicured lawns to the sea beyond. It all makes a comfortable setting for the daily-changing four- and five-course menus, where locally sourced produce is the backbone of the assured, classically based cooking. Show more

About the area
Dumfries and Galloway is a wonderfully undiscovered corner of Scotland – a romantic land of wooded glens, high hills and exposed moorland, haunted by its colourful past and the ghosts of those who fell in fierce and bloody battles. Heading west from Gretna Green you soon reach Dumfries, straddling the River Nith, where you may see red-breasted mergansers in summer
