Basildon Park

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
This 18th-century house, built of Bath stone, fell into decay in the 20th century, but was beautifully restored by Lord and Lady Iliffe in the 1950s. The classical front has a splendid central portico and pavilions, and inside there are delicate plasterwork decorations on the walls and ceilings. The Octagon drawing room has fine pictures and furniture, and there is a small formal garden. The mansion is set in 400 acres of historic parkland, so there’s plenty of room to stretch your legs. About the area
Berkshire consists of two distinct parts: the western half, which is predominantly rural, with the Lambourn Downs spilling down to the River Lambourn and the Berkshire Downs to the majestic Thames, and the eastern half of Berkshire, which offers plenty of opportunity to get out and savour open spaces. Reading and Newbury are the county’s major towns, and the River Kennet flows through them both.
