Englefield House Garden
Overview
The gardens at Englefield were established over four hundred years ago and records show that in 1936 the woodland garden on the hill was created by thinning an existing forest. Much of the original planting is still evident and includes varieties of rhododendron, azalea, camellia, magnolia, hamamelis, parrotia, cornus, davidia and acer. More recent developments include the grotto with its fir cone-studded interior, The Ivy House at the top of the garden, the round pebble garden and the yellow and blue garden enclosed in clipped yew. There is also a children’s garden.

About the area
Berkshire consists of two distinct parts: the western half, which is predominantly rural, with the Lambourn Downs spilling down to the River Lambourn and the Berkshire Downs to the majestic Thames, and the eastern half of Berkshire, which offers plenty of opportunity to get out and savour open spaces. Reading and Newbury are the county’s major towns, and the River Kennet flows through them both.
