RSPB St Bees Head
Overview
Blow away the cobwebs with a bracing walk along the cliff top path, and you can see across to the Isle of Man on a clear day. In spring and summer, you'll want to stop at the three RSPB viewpoints to marvel at the largest seabird colony in north-west England. Guillemots, kittiwakes, fulmars and razorbills wheel noisily overhead, while ravens and peregrines are often seen soaring along the cliffs. Offshore, you can also see skuas and shearwaters, and if you are lucky you may spot dolphins and porpoises.
About the area
Cumbria's rugged yet beautiful landscape is best known for the Lake District National Park that sits within its boundaries. It’s famous for Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, and Derwent Water, ‘Queen of the English Lakes', but other lesser-known areas in the south, such as the Lune Valley and the coastal towns, are secret gems of wide cobbled streets and rolling hills.
