Barrow Hill Roundhouse Railway Centre
Overview
The Barrow Hill Roundhouse Railway Centre, just outside Chesterfield, is the last surviving operational roundhouse engine shed in Britain, and a unique example of 19th-century railway architecture. A group of dedicated rail enthusiasts known as the Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society rescued the site from dereliction in 1991, and now run special events on the site, featuring working steam and diesel locomotives, which are often joined by a variety of modern diesels. Trade stands, catering and a free bus service from Chesterfield railway station for these special events make for a great day out. But no trip to the Roundhouse would be complete without a ride on a train, and rides from the Roundhouse Halt, a purpose-built platform, take visitors around the depot and up the Springwell branch line, pulled by either a steam or diesel locomotive.

About the area
The natural features of this central English county range from the modest heights of the Peak District National Park, where Kinder Scout stands at 2,088 ft (636 m), to the depths of its remarkable underground caverns, floodlit to reveal exquisite Blue John stone. Walkers and cyclists will enjoy the High Peak Trail which extends from the Derwent Valley to the limestone plateau near Buxton, and for many, the spectacular scenery is what draws them to the area.
