Peak Rail - Matlock Station
Overview
Experience the thrill of steam on the Peak Rail preserved railway, which operates over four miles between Matlock and Rowsley, and is open to the public throughout the year. The line was part of the old Midland Railway’s route between Manchester Central and London St Pancras, which was closed in 1968. Most of the rest is now the Monsal Trail walking and riding route. The northern terminus at Rowsley Station is on the site of the former LMS/BR locomotive depot. Facilities include an exhibition showing how the line was rebuilt by volunteers.

About the area
The natural features of this central English county range from the modest heights of the Peak District National Park, where Kinder Scout stands at 2,088 ft (636 m), to the depths of its remarkable underground caverns, floodlit to reveal exquisite Blue John stone. Walkers and cyclists will enjoy the High Peak Trail which extends from the Derwent Valley to the limestone plateau near Buxton, and for many, the spectacular scenery is what draws them to the area.
