Knightshayes
Overview
Knightshayes is a country estate on a grand, gothic scale. The house is the work of William Burges, the 19th-century architect whose short career - he died at the age of 53 - saw only a small number of commissions completed. His work shows all the signs of the Victorian fashion for Gothic Revival architecture, and includes gargoyles, corbels and a medieval-inspired Great Hall. The garden is one of the finest in Devon, and its collection is one of the most varied in the National Trust. There are over 1200 plant species in the garden, and a riot of seasonal colour is guaranteed. The walled kitchen garden is also worth a look, covering over four acres, and brimming with seasonal produce for the Stables Café.
