Tiverton Castle
Overview
The original castle, built in 1106 by order of Henry I, was rebuilt in the late 13th-14th centuries. It resisted General Fairfax during the Civil War but fell to him when a lucky shot hit the drawbridge chain. Now a private house, the gardens are lovely and there's a fine Civil War armoury, some pieces of which can be tried on. Princess Katherine Plantagenet lived here – she was daughter of Edward IV and the White Queen, sister of the Princes in the Tower and of Henry VII`s Queen Elizabeth, and a favourite aunt of Henry VIII. She was also a niece of Richard III, the 'King in the Car Park'.
