Montacute House

Overview
Set amidst formal gardens, Montacute House was built by Sir Edward Phelips, a successful lawyer and Speaker of the House of Commons from 1604-11. He is probably best known as the opening prosecuting counsel in the trial of Guy Fawkes. Inside there are decorated ceilings, ornate fireplaces, heraldic glass and fine wood panelling. The Long Gallery displays a permanent collection of Tudor and Jacobean portraits from the National Portrait Gallery in London. Montacute has been used as the setting for successful films such as the 1995 version of Sense and Sensibility.

About the area
Somerset remains rural and unspoiled, and ever popular areas to visit are the limestone and red sandstone Mendip Hills rising to over 1,000 feet, and by complete contrast, to the south and southwest, the flat landscape of the Somerset Levels. Another popular spot, the Quantocks, once the haunt of poets Coleridge and Wordsworth, are noted for their gentle slopes, heather-covered moorland expanses and red deer.
