Overview
The ancient oaks of Swell Wood are part of a continuous strip of woodland extending some 10miles (15km) along the ridge from Langport to the Blackdown Hills. It has the largest colony of breeding grey herons in south-west England - more than 100 pairs - and a small number of little egrets nest here. Between March and June is the best time to come and see the spectacle.
Location
Off A377, SWELL, TA3 6PX
About the area
Somerset remains rural and unspoiled, and ever popular areas to visit are the limestone and red sandstone Mendip Hills rising to over 1,000 feet, and by complete contrast, to the south and southwest, the flat landscape of the Somerset Levels. Another popular spot, the Quantocks, once the haunt of poets Coleridge and Wordsworth, are noted for their gentle slopes, heather-covered moorland expanses and red deer.
