Arundel Cathedral

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
Arundel’s French-style Neo-Gothic Roman Catholic Cathedral looms high above the town. Completed in 1873, it is faced with pale gold Bath stone, and its architect was Joseph Hansom. It was built for the influential Henry Howard, 15th Duke of Norfolk, whose ancestral seat was Arundel Castle. Its dedication is to Our Lady and St Philip Howard, the 13th Earl of Arundel. He was imprisoned for his Catholic faith in 1585, and remained incarcerated in the Tower of London until his death some ten years later. A statue of the martyr on his tomb in the cathedral commemorates also his pet dog, whose comparative freedom of movement enabled Howard to communicate with other prisoners.

About the area
Divided from East Sussex back in 1888, West Sussex has a variety of landscapes and coastal scenery, but it is the spacious and open South Downs with which the county is most closely associated. There are plenty of walking routes in the South Downs National Park, cycling routes by the sea or visitors can explore the pretty town of Arundel with its historic castle and buildings.
