Keighley & Worth Valley Railway & Museum

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
The line was built mainly to serve the valley’s mills, and passes through the heart of Brontë country. Beginning at Keighley Station – shared with the mainline – it climbs up to Haworth, and terminates at Oxenhope, which has a storage and restoration building. At Haworth there are locomotive workshops, and at Ingrow West, an award-winning museum. Steam trains operate at weekends and holiday time, but there’s also a regular diesel service. Many special events take place throughout the year, including the successful curry and fish-and-chips trains. The much-loved 1970 family movie, The Railway Children, featured the KWVR and particularly Oakworth Station.

About the area
Everybody knows that Yorkshire has some special landscapes. The Dales and the Moors first spring to mind, but what about West Yorkshire? That’s Leeds and Bradford isn’t it? Back-to-back houses and blackened mills… Certainly if you had stood on any of the hills surrounding Hebden Bridge a hundred years ago, and gazed down into the valley, all you would have seen was the pall of smoke issuing from the chimneys of 33 textile mills.
