Cliffe Castle Museum & Gallery
Overview
Built as a millionaire’s mansion, the house displays Victorian interiors, together with collections of local and natural history, ceramics, dolls, geological items and minerals. One popular feature is a model of a giant newt, which used to live in the area. There are also Victorian toys, local historical items and a working beehive, the bees coming in and out through a tube, which leads to a hole in the wall. There’s a play area for children in the grounds which are undergoing renovations.

About the area
Everybody knows that Yorkshire has some special landscapes. The Dales and the Moors first spring to mind, but what about West Yorkshire? That’s Leeds and Bradford isn’t it? Back-to-back houses and blackened mills… Certainly if you had stood on any of the hills surrounding Hebden Bridge a hundred years ago, and gazed down into the valley, all you would have seen was the pall of smoke issuing from the chimneys of 33 textile mills.
