East Riddlesden Hall

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
The interior of this stern-looking 17th-century manor house is furnished with textiles, Yorkshire oak and pewter, together with fine examples of 17th-century embroidery. The honeysuckle-and rose-covered facade ruin of the Starke Wing provides the backdrop to the garden. Wild flowers, perennials and a fragrant herb border provide a transition of colour throughout the year. Talk to the helpful attendants, who can tell you a wealth of local ghost stories. There’s a magnificent old tithe barn in the grounds to explore, too.

About the area
Everybody knows that Yorkshire has some special landscapes. The Dales and the Moors first spring to mind, but what about West Yorkshire? That’s Leeds and Bradford isn’t it? Back-to-back houses and blackened mills… Certainly if you had stood on any of the hills surrounding Hebden Bridge a hundred years ago, and gazed down into the valley, all you would have seen was the pall of smoke issuing from the chimneys of 33 textile mills.
