St Mirin's Cathedral
Overview
The Catholic church was established here in 1808, and the current substantial cathedral building – which serves the diocese of Paisley – dates to 1932. Designed by Thomas Baird, it is in a neo-Norman style, and clear glass helps make it light and airy inside. It is undergoing major refurbishment at the time of writing (2014) to preserve the structure and to improve facilities and access. St Mirin was an Irish monk and missionary, and is the patron saint of Paisley. A 2007 bronze statue of him by sculptor Norman Galbraith stands opposite the cathedral. Galbraith also created the shrine within the cathedral to the 17th-century martyr, St John Ogilvie.
