Overview
The castle, set on the 240ft Dumbarton Rock above the River Clyde, dominates the town (the capital of the Celtic kingdom of Strathclyde) and commands spectacular views. Most of what can be seen today dates from the 18th and 19th centuries, but there are a few earlier remains.

The broad valley of the River Leven stretches from the loch right down to the River Clyde and is one of the best stretches of river in Scotland for salmon and sea trout.
