Honley Wood from Meltham
Follow the sign for a public bridleway next to the entrance to Lu’s Place café, walking between industrial areas to bear right into peaceful woodland. At the first fork bear left. Ignore minor paths to either side to pass springs before rising, after a mile (1.6km), gently away from Meltham’s industrial hum. Eventually the path drops to pass through another metal portal, into a track.
In 60yds (55m) it meets a better-surfaced lane; continue ahead for 10yds (9m), then pass through a gap stile on your right signed ‘Meltham Way’. This carries you back into the woods on a muddy, ascending path, topping out just beyond a large rock outcrop at a T-junction of paths.
Turn right, along the level Meltham Way. Breaks in the trees gives you occasional views across the Meltham Valley and beyond to distinctive Pule Hill, above Marsden, as well as Crosland Hall in the Colne Valley below, and the village of Netherton’s church tower on the opposite valley side. The braided path flirts between gritstone edge on your right and fence on your left. When the fence bears off left, fork right, along the edge. After 500yds (457m), it crosses a wide track, re-entering woodland. Fork right immediately, on a path that follows a fence on your right, soon bearing right on another path which joins from the left. It now runs between a wall and a fence for 300yds (274m) to meet a lane, beyond a pair of large boulders.
Cross the lane and pass through a metal portal opposite. Take the track ahead-left, which soon winds down into the woods on an engineered trail, past the outcrops of an old stone quarry. It descends to your outward path and back to the start point.
