"An impressive building with a fascinating history."
Overview
Berkeley Castle is the oldest castle in England to still be inhabited by the same family that built it almost 900 years ago. Edward II was gruesomely murdered here and there are fascinating links with William Shakespeare, Elizabeth I, Henry VIII and Sir Francis Drake. It has 8 acres of gardens and grounds, a yurt tearoom, gift shop, and a tropical butterfly house. The castle has also been used in many films including Wolf Hall, Poldark, The White Princess and Johnny English Strikes Again.

About the area
Gloucestershire is home to a variety of landscapes, including the Cotswolds, a region of gentle hills, valleys and gem-like villages that roll through the county. To their west is the Severn Plain, watered by Britain’s longest river and characterised by orchards and farms marked out by hedgerows that blaze with mayflower in the spring; beyond the Severn are the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley.
