Overview
Occupying over 2,000 acres of the Dungeness peninsula, this is the largest shingle beach of its kind in Europe. About 60 species of birds breed on the reserve each year, including large numbers of waterfowl and waders. Marsh harriers, bitterns and bearded tits nest in the reed beds along with more common reed and sedge warblers and reed buntings. In spring and autumn migrating birds such as warblers and waders pass through Dungeness, while in winter the reserve plays host to hundreds of wildfowl, including pintail, smew and goldeneye. Many plants, butterflies, bees and dragonflies can also be seen around the nature trail.

Visitors can explore historic parklands, including Knole Park and Sir Winston Churchill’s former home at Chartwell, or beautiful nature reserves, such as the coppiced woodlands of Denge Wood and Earley Wood and the ancient fine chalk woodland of Yockletts Bank.
