"A great place to stay, with a relaxed atmosphere and wonderful location."
Overview
The Painswick has had a varied history since being built in the late 18th century, including being a vicarage, guest house and hotel. The ornate architecture has been preserved, with the old chapel still evident and many aspects of the Arts and Crafts era still in place. Afternoons here might involve their relaxed take on afternoon tea, showcasing the best local and home-made produce, including pork pies, scotch eggs and the lightest of scones. Evenings in Sauce, the award-winning restaurant offer indulgent fine-dining but without any of the formal faff. Guests will enjoy the many walks starting and ending at the hotel and taking the village and surrounding countryside.

About the area
Gloucestershire is home to a variety of landscapes, including the Cotswolds, a region of gentle hills, valleys and gem-like villages that roll through the county. To their west is the Severn Plain, watered by Britain’s longest river and characterised by orchards and farms marked out by hedgerows that blaze with mayflower in the spring; beyond the Severn are the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley.
