The Crown Inn
"A handsome Cotswold inn perfect for whiling away an hour or two"
Overview
Right in the heart of the village, the Crown is surrounded by the peace and quiet of the Golden Valley. Once a simple cider house, it’s a classic 17th-century Cotswold-stone inn that’s full of old-world charm, with honey-coloured stone walls, beams and open fireplaces where logs blaze in winter. Plenty of seating in the large garden allows for contemplative supping during the warmer months. Gloucestershire beers, such as Stroud Organic and Laurie Lee’s Bitter, are usually showcased alongside others from the region, and a good choice of wines by the glass is served in the restaurant and three inviting bars. Fresh local food with lots of seasonal specials is the carte’s promise. Smoked haddock, leek and pearl barley risotto with a poached egg makes a tasty starter, to be followed perhaps by curried chicken Kiev with home-made mango chutney and cauliflower biryani. For non-meat eaters, the vegetable hotpot with braised red cabbage is ideal.

About the area
Gloucestershire is home to a variety of landscapes, including the Cotswolds, a region of gentle hills, valleys and gem-like villages that roll through the county. To their west is the Severn Plain, watered by Britain’s longest river and characterised by orchards and farms marked out by hedgerows that blaze with mayflower in the spring; beyond the Severn are the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley.
