The Tontine Hotel★★★
"The hotel is ideally located to tour the Scottish Borders."
Overview
The Tontine is a wonderful small hotel located between the high street and the River Tweed. Built in 1806, possibly by French prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars, a 'tontine' was a unique way of funding the cost of the building project where people buy shares and nominate an individual – the nominated person who lives the longest gets to own the property. The hotel is ideally located to tour the Scottish Borders and just 21 miles from Edinburgh. Meals are served in the remarkable Adam Room while the lounge area is ever possible for lunches and afternoon teas. Some of the comfortable bedrooms look out onto the River Tweed.

About the area
Southern Scotland is often referred to as the Lowlands, to distinguish it from the mountainous grandeur of the North-West Highlands. But don’t be fooled by the description.
