"Lovely country pub serving exciting food"
Overview
This pub in a little village south of Stevenage goes from strength to strength thanks to brothers James and Tom Bainbridge and a very experienced and welcoming team. The self-taught and award-winning head chef is passionate about sourcing the best ingredients for his exciting modern British dishes. You could opt for a pub classic such as game cottage pie, or look to the à la carte choices – pheasant breast, wild mushrooms and pickled mustard seeds; braised rabbit, carrot cake and jus; or goats’ cheese fondant, kale, braised baby onions, peas and lettuce. A set menu is available at both lunch and dinner, and there is an extensive wine list.

About the area
As Hertfordshire is so close to London, many of its towns have become commuter havens. St Albans, less than 19 miles (30km) from the capital, has retained its distinctive character, along with many historic remains.
