Felbrigg Hall
Overview
Set in the tranquil Norfolk countryside, this great 17th-century house is one of the best in East Anglia. It was begun in the 1620s by a lawyer, Frances Windham, whose grandson William made modifications and filled the rooms with pictures, including many seascapes, he had acquired on a tour of Italy. Intricate plaster ceilings and a fine library are further highlights of the interior. Less grand, perhaps, but equally fascinating is the kitchen, with its array of household implements, utensils and gleaming copper pots and pans. Outside, the walled garden contains a functioning dovecote and allotments. There is free access to the estate, where way-marked trails thread their way past venerable trees. The nearby 15th-century parish church, standing alone, has box pews, memorial brasses and interesting family monuments.

About the area
The North Norfolk Coast is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and probably the finest of its kind in Europe. Here you’ll find a string of quaint villages and small towns – Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea and Cley next the Sea are 21st-century favourites, while Sheringham and Cromer are classic examples of a good old-fashioned seaside resort where grand Victorian hotels look out to sea.
