Ickworth House, Park & Gardens

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
This beautiful neoclassical mansion is set in acres of landscaped parkland and is owned by the National Trust. The central Rotunda dominates the landscape and was built as a magnificent 18th-century showcase to house the Hervey family's collections, including Georgian silver; Regency furniture; family portraits by Gainsborough, Hogarth and Romney; fine porcelain; books and miniatures. Beneath the Rotunda is the restored servants' basement portraying life in service in the 1930s. The 1,800 acres of parkland feature the earliest Italian-style gardens in the country and a walled garden with extensive cycle trails, waymarked walks and a children's playground. There are events and activities all year round - check website for details. Photo credits: Andreas von Einsiedel, Robert Morris, Andrew Butler & David Kirkham.

About the area
Suffolk is Constable country, where the county’s crumbling, time-ravaged coastline spreads itself under wide skies to convey a wonderful sense of remoteness and solitude. Highly evocative and atmospheric, this is where rivers wind lazily to the sea and notorious 18th-century smugglers hid from the excise men.
