Stotfold Watermill & Nature Reserve

Recommended by Visit England Logo
Overview
Stotford Watermill, in its idyllic setting on the River Ivel, is unique. Although it burnt down in 1992, it is now a Grade II listed watermill that has been completely rebuilt with three fully accessible floors. Some of the machinery survived the fire and has been restored. Notable features are the overshot corn mill waterwheel which is the widest in the country and the hursting frame originally installed in 1897 by Whitmore & Binyon. It produces stone-ground floor which is on sale in the gift shop. The adjacent meadow has been officially designated a Local Nature Reserve, and has plantings of native trees, hedges and a wildflower meadow. Ponds have been dug to benefit birds, insects and amphibians, and living willow hides and a pond dipping platform have been constructed.

About the area
At its most southern point, Bedfordshire is only 35 miles from London Waterloo, so there’s a good reason for the UK’s fifth busiest airport to be called London Luton Airport. The county is one of England’s smaller in terms of area, but more than makes up for it in terms of business HQs and visitor attractions.
