Mount St Bernard Abbey

Overview
Ambrose de Lisle gave the land in Charnwood Forest to found this Cistercian monastery in 1835. The community was originally housed in a cottage, but when money became available for building the abbey church in 1844, the great ecclesiastical architect of his day, A W Pugin, stepped in and offered his services for free. Today the abbey is home to around 35 Trappist monks, who divide their time between prayer, Bible study and work on their dairy farm and pottery – you can visit the church, and buy some of their varied produce in the gift shop.
